What Drives Fence Cost in Raleigh?
The most honest answer to “how much?” is a range, and a long one. Ask five people and you will hear five numbers, partly because fence pricing depends on so many choices. This guide covers what moves the price so that you can compare quotes fairly.
What published prices tell us
Third-party sites list Raleigh-area figures in the tens of dollars per linear foot. They differ by material and date: one Raleigh page is from 2022 and likely outdated, a marketplace lists a lower range for chain link than for a privacy fence, and national averages for vinyl, aluminum, and wood sit higher than some local pages. The figures conflict, so we do not publish a price table. Treat any single number you see online as a conversation starter, not a quote.
What changes the price
- Material. Wood, vinyl, aluminum, composite, and chain link all price differently. Raleigh’s development code allows each of them in most locations, but chain link is barred in front and side street setbacks.
- Height. Taller fences use more material and stronger posts. See the height rules for what your yard allows.
- Length and layout. Corners, gates, and slopes add labor. Long runs can need breaks, as the city requires for planes over 100 feet.
- Gates. Single and double gates add cost. Ask for gates as a line item.
- Old fence removal. Taking down and hauling away an existing fence is often priced separately. Ask whether it is included.
- Site conditions. Access, tree roots, and heavy soil can slow digging. Ask the installer how they would handle your yard.
- Permits and surveys. If you need a permit or a survey, ask who pays.
- Timing and demand. Busy seasons can mean longer waits, and possibly higher prices.
How to compare estimates
- Decide height, material, and gate count first, so every quote covers the same fence.
- Get at least three written estimates.
- Make sure each says whether it includes the permit, the 811 request, old-fence removal, and haul-away.
- Ask how posts will be set and what the material is rated for. See wood fences and the Triangle’s humidity.
- Look at the payment schedule. Paying everything upfront leaves you with little leverage.
